The service of Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. It is a service where we begin "the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word" (Book of Common Prayer, p. 265).

The focus of the service is on repentance and, as a reminder of our mortal nature, receiving the imposition of ashes on one's forehead.  As such, we will not have a “celebration" of Holy Communion due to the penitential and solemn nature of service.
